The Fairhaven Fontier Kicks Off

Fairhaven's Holiday Drinks

With the holiday season well underway, there are some special drinks now being celebrated around downtown Fairhaven. Many cafes now offer their version of an Eggnog latte. Here are some more specialized drinks around town.

Skylark’s is featuring their Hot Spiced Cranberry Cider. The recipe, created by café owner Donald White, features fresh ingredients including cranberry and apple juices with citrus, cloves, brown sugar and a fresh stick of cinnamon.
“It smells so delicious,” server Katie said, “Every time I make it, I want to drink it.”

The Rustic Coffee Bar boasts many specials this season. The two best selling drinks are the French Toast latte which is made with maple syrup, brown sugar and cinnamon and the Eggnog Butterscotch latte.
“We pick flavors people don’t know we have and switch them up to make rich drinks,” a barista said.

Katie at Tony’s Coffee described their Spiced Apple cider a little differently. A blend of homemade malt spice heated with apple juice, this drink is sure to stir some holiday spirit. One classic they also serve is the Chai tea latte, made with Oregon Chai brand tea.

At the Colophon Café, server Sam Brown is making Pumpkin Spice lattes in addition to the seasonal Eggnog lattes. She says it is the homemade whip cream and real nutmeg that set their drinks apart.

Bicycle Trails in Fairhaven

Though the temperatures drop and the weather changes, there are still opportunities to take a bike ride along one of the many trails in the Fairhaven area.

The Connelly Creek Trail runs for a mile between Ferry and Donovan Avenues, continuing along Old Fairhaven Parkway. The trail is easy, as it runs along meadows and lightly wooded areas. Limited parking is available at the southern entrance on Donovan Avenue.

Most renowned in the Fairhaven neighborhood is the Interurban Trail. A ride from 10th Street to Larrabee State Park will run just over 6.5 miles. Some notable features of the Interurban include a ride along a former railroad bed, some views of the San Juan Islands and the Bellingham and Chuckanut Bays. There are many places to park, including Fairhaven Park and numerous spots along Chuckanut Drive.

The Larrabee Trail follows the lower section of Padden creek and offers opportunities to observe wildlife and views of Bellingham Bay. During late fall, salmon are often seen running upstream in Padden Creek. At Fairhaven Harbor, there is an observation deck to see marine life.
A couple of the access points include one on the west side at Fourth and McKenzie Avenues and also one at the intersection of 10th Street and Donovan Avenue. There is about a mile of trail to ride.

Harbor Project Not First to Spark Controversy

The Fairhaven Harbor project will not be the first to stir controversy in the area as many buildings have met opposition in recent years.
One of the most recent projects is one that would span over an area of 85 acres.

In 2008, the Fairhaven Highlands project faced many environmental implications, as developers sought to construct a bridge over Padden Creek for residential access between Chuckanut Drive and 24th Street. The plan included construction of 739 homes on a forested hill in the South Neighborhood. Ten project alternatives are currently being studied.
